Dioramas & Reframing | Design Basics exercise at Shenkar
3The concluding exercise “out of context” in the design basics course A` in the architecture and interior design department at the Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art. In this exercise, the students researched locations in their living environment (Segar and that…) and from the research they let new contexts arise and come true as dioramas and miniature scenes. One of the main ideas in the exercise was to present both contexts – the original and the new, thus creating a narrative that would show both in a new light.

Hospital room inside a motorcycle helmet: the work of the student Bracha Ilan.
“By contrasting the cozy, warm space with the cold, rough asphalt road, a dissonance is created that is designed to intrigue and surprise the viewer.”
+
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in a Tel Aviv window: the work of student Zoe Shukarn.
“The idea was to create the illusion of a bridge hanging inside a window rail. The connection of the location to the idea is that a bridge connects places and a window creates a separation. I chose a side angle so that they could clearly see the window and the model spread out over it. In the second shooting angle I shot opposite and from a low height to give a feeling of a view from a vehicle that is on the bridge, in addition I photographed in different natural lighting in order to give the realistic feeling of a bridge in day and night lighting, with the artificial light of car headlights and street lighting.”

Smoking lounge in a tea pot: the work of the student Rafael Abergel.
“In my Polish grandmother’s house there was a smoking area with a luxurious design and European style, with crystal tea cups and special tea infusions. Always after the meal the smokers would go across the room and talk while the children stayed to play in the living room. In our eyes, the room always had an aura of attribution.”

Camping and bonfire on the stove in the kitchen: the work of the student Assaf Belali.
“Cooking at home is a warming thing and on winter days in general – a good substitute for a campfire in the forest with friends. A small flame can create an atmosphere of great warmth.”

A fashion route between the hangers in the wardrobe: the work of the student Ben Cohen.
“The name of the work WELL USED – alludes to the exploitation that takes place in the world of fashion. The choice of colorful and vivid neon lighting, which appears to be a cold light, expresses the dichotomy that exists in the world of modeling – shiny and attractive on the outside, cold and alienating on the inside. To experience the work, the viewer is obliged to enter the closet , which creates another experience of disconnection. The track built on the unfixed clothes hangers is meant to express discomfort and stability.”

The Knesset residence in a toilet: the work of the student Chen Parvolotsky.
“Beit Moshav. Childish, but invested and authentic.”
+
An ashtray that became a carousel and a coffee table that grew into a park: the work of student Idan Hershko.
“The amusement park – the place where small children play and release energy. But on the other hand, when darkness falls, the negative characteristics are revealed and the fun turns into horror. A cinematic ‘trope’ based on real cases: kidnappings, thefts, assassinations. The dark side.”
+
A wedding on the kitchen counter: the work of the student Ziv Tahel.
“Cooking is a marriage between ingredients.”
+
Camping on the cutting board: the work of student Sapir Meman.
“Being in nature and spending time with friends are as necessary to our existence as the food we consume.”
